The Hills & Mountains

The southern uplands traverse Dumfries & Galloway, giving a landscape of rugged peaks and rolling green hills. Many of the hills are covered with canopies of ancient woodland, where tranquil paths weave their way between the trees. There are amazing views across southern Scotland and over the Solway Firth and small hamlets nestled in the pretty valleys beneath the fells.

In the late 1600's the Galloway hills were a retreat for those fleeing religious persecution, and later in the 18th century were the temporary home of fierce and colourful gypsy clans. These days, the hills are the retreat of those looking to a more relaxed pace of life amid magnificent scenery and fresh air. Dumfries and Galloway is the perfect place to escape to, and one of the few remaining wildernesses in Britain.

Rivers

Being specialists in properties in Annan, we might be biased towards the River Annan, which you can walk beside from the town's pretty Everholm Park. Winding paths lead into pleasant woodlands, filled with birdsong and wildflowers. The river is never far away, making the atmosphere calm and restful.

Nearby, flowing through Dumfries is the salmon fishing river, the Nith. As this meanders through the south of the region, it emerges into the Solway Firth in a truly stunning coastal environment. And of course, the Solway itself, the estuary of the River Eden. Providing a home to thousands of wading and sea birds, the firth offers spectacular views across to the Cumbrian Hills. Sandy beaches give way to picturesque rocky outcrops along its coast - making a landscape of unrivalled beauty.
With clean air and open countryside, the rivers of Dumfries & Galloway are clean and pure, offering many gentle riverside walks and a habitat for rare wildlife and flora.
